# What are Domain and Pattern Blockers?

## Domain Blocker

The **Domain Blocker** is enabled by default. It blocks based on DNS requests (the Domain Name Service to resolve a domain to an IP address). The Domain Blocker can also be used **without**activating the eBlocker HTTPS function.

## Pattern Blocker

The **Pattern Blocker** recognizes patterns (like *tracker*.php) in URLs and domains. For these blockers the activation of the eBlocker [HTTPS function](https://eblocker.org/en/docs/https/) is necessary.

### Block list formats

eBlocker is capable of handling different formats of [blocking lists which are described here](https://eblocker.org/en/docs/what-kind-of-list-formats-are-supported/).
