Hello Newsletter Subscriber,

Today we have a lot of news for you about the latest eBlocker developments:

White Cube survey result
In April, we asked our German-speaking users who were still using a "White Cube" eBlocker why they have not yet switched to the Raspberry Pi. Here are the results: Over 52% answered that there had been no reason to switch so far and almost 40% said they did not know how to migrate. We have noted both points and are taking the feedback into account for further development. More about the survey results here (in German only).

Background: New Linux for all eBlockers
At the end of June 2024, the vendor update support for the "Debian Linux Buster" we are using will expire. To avoid security and other operational problems, we need to upgrade to the new "Debian Bookworm" version. This upgrade is technically very complex and will inevitably involve a change of SD card for all users.

Hardware change necessary for white cube users
The new Linux no longer officially supports the old computer board of the white cube (Banana Pi m2+). We do not want to implement an unofficial version of the operating system because this would entail both security risks and disproportionately high maintenance and testing efforts. A migration to Raspberry Pi or a virtual machine is therefore unavoidable for all White Cube users. Hence the above-mentioned survey. 💡

Change from the White Cube: Only self-build possible
We would like to take this opportunity to ask once again for your understanding that we are unable to build Raspberry Pi eBlockers as part of our voluntary work. Building one yourself is easier and quicker than building a "cheap Billi shelf" (see video here). If you are still facing challenges, Stefan and others in the community can help you (see here in the forum, German only). 🙏 Many thanks to Stefan for the great help!

Easy OS upgrade for all devices in development
We are currently designing a mechanism to make it as easy as possible to migrate between different eBlockerOS devices (such as White Cube to Raspi) and to upgrade the operating system on the same device. As soon as the concept is finalized, we will inform you about it in our newsletter.
Please wait before replacing your White Cube if you want it to be as simple and smooth as possible. We will inform you well in advance and there is no need to panic! We take everyone with us 😉

Raspberry Pi 5 and 64bit support
With Debian Bookworm, eBlockerOS will not only receive the latest Linux version, but will also support the new Raspberry Pi 5 and a modern 64bit architecture on all devices. However, there are currently still some software-related challenges with the new hardware and Debian Bookworm. As soon as these have been resolved and eBlockerOS is running smoothly, we will publish benchmark results for the individual hardware platforms. This is to support a targeted purchase decision based on the real eBlockerOS speed. You might want to wait for this before deciding on new hardware..

Tight financial situation
As you may know, eBlocker is not backed by investors, sponsors or even large companies. We are just a very small team of privacy enthusiasts who work on eBlocker on a voluntary basis in our spare time. We also don't receive millions like adblocker plugins that allow supposedly "acceptable advertising" from the advertising industry to pass through or even sell user data. We do not use any tricks or hidden business models. That's why we have to cover all of our operating costs through donations alone.

However, financing is hardly possible at present due to the very weak donation situation. If this situation continues, the long-term operation of eBlocker will become very difficult - or even impossible.

We would therefore like to invite you once again to donate, as despite our voluntary commitment, we can only continue to develop and operate eBlocker with your help.

We are fully committed to continue fighting for a free internet without ads, trackers and data collectors and thank you so much for your support!

Best regards
Boris, Christian and the entire eBlocker team
