Hello Newsletter Subscriber,
We are pleased to share lots of news after the summer vacation:
eBlockerOS 4 comes with DoT
The migration of eBlockerOS to the new Debian Linux Bookworm OS is progressing. We have identified all components which are incompatible with Bookworm and are currently revising these components. At present, we are working on the “heart” of eBlocker, the so-called ICAP server and the integrated DNS firewall. We have decided to completely replace the previous DNS server of the DNS firewall in order to avoid technical legacy issues. With the new DNS server, eBlockerOS 4 will also be able to handle “DNS over TLS” (DoT for short). This enables authenticated and encrypted DNS queries, making it impossible to manipulate DNS responses.
Incidentally, DNS manipulations are very rare in Western countries. However, with DoT, all users benefit from the encryption, which prevents the domains visited from being monitored by the provider or state actors.

New DNS for eBlocker Mobile
As part of the revisions for eBlockerOS 4, we have already implemented a major change a few weeks ago: Our Domain Name Service (DNS) for eBlocker Mobile, which we officially offer for testing purposes only, has been completely replaced. Instead of the custom component previously implemented in Ruby, we now use the open source DNS server CoreDNS. We have extended the server with a plugin for eBlocker functions, which we have also already published as open source on Github.
According to our analysis, the server changeover was completely transparent and problem-free for all users. Please let us know in our forum if you encounter any errors with eBlocker Mobile connections using our new test DNS. Please note, however, that we cannot guarantee permanent availability of the test DNS and therefore recommend a commercial DynDNS service for continuous operation.

New danger of server-side tracking: eBlockerOS is protecting already
The Internet and tracking technologies are constantly changing. A new tracking method is currently spreading rapidly: so-called “server-side tracking”. A perfidious method that can unfortunately no longer be blocked with simple DNS blockers such as Pi-hole or Ad-Guard. This is due to the fact that the external tracking server disguises itself under the same domain as the visited website. Fortunately, eBlockerOS can also recognize and block server-side tracking thanks to its advanced pattern recognition (pattern blocker). Users who have activated eBlocker HTTPS and daily updates are already protected from this new tracking method.
