Hello Newsletter Subscriber,
We have a lot of news for you again today:
YouTube against ad blockers: eBlockerOS not affected Google is currently stepping up its efforts to stop the blocking of ads on YouTube. As a result, many ad blocker browser plugins need to be deactivated if you want to continue watching videos. Fortunately, eBlockerOS has not been affected so far thanks to a different technical approach: With eBlockerOS enabled, YouTube continues to work in Firefox and Safari without any ads. 👍
eBlockerOS 3 coming soon We are working at full speed to finalize eBlockerOS 3 including IPv6 support. However, during our ongoing tests over the last few weeks, we have repeatedly encountered small issues which have taken longer than expected to find and resolve. If no further bugs occur preventing a release, we expect to publish eBlockerOS 3 (beta) before christmas.

What Apple is capable of... With iOS 17, Apple has introduced a new feature that is designed to prevent the tracking of links in newsletters in particular. We are pleased that Apple has implemented a technology which has been activated by default in eBlockerOS since April 2022 (kudos to @MainzelM). The advantage for eBlocker users: not only Apple devices with the latest operating system are protected from link tracking, but all older devices too - from all vendors.
HTTPS certificates expire If you have activated HTTPS support in your eBlocker, you should know the following: For security reasons, the certificate generated by eBlocker has a validity period of three years. Four weeks before the expiry date, eBlockerOS automatically generates a new certificate. eBlockerOS points this out both in the dashboard and in the settings (HTTPS>Certificate tab).
Important: To ensure complete protection, the new certificate must be installed exactly like the existing certificate. BTW: The certificate installation is technically independent of the update license, which has a separate duration. Please find help for the certificate installation on all operating systems here.

Low-cost Raspberry Pi alternatives Even though the Raspberry Pi 5 has just been released, we continue to rely on the proven Raspberry Pi 4 series with eBlockerOS. We plan to support the new Raspberry Pi 5 by the end of 2024 at the earliest, as it offers no advantages for eBlockerOS and there are cheaper and better-performing alternatives:
For a good alternative - also to the Raspberry 4 - our team member @CalimerO has a valuable tip: Used ThinClient computers are available including power supply and housing for as little as $30. eBlockerOS can be booted and run permanently on these devices without an extra operating system. In a new blog post we describe how to install eBlockerOS to boot from a PC.
Our team is growing Thanks to the call in the last newsletter we were able to win two new team members and are very happy about it: @Suresh from Hyderabad, India is planning the upcoming, very complex Linux upgrade to Debian Bookworm. And @tdq from Switzerland is converting the automated testing to JUnit 5, so that we are also up to date here. A big thank you at this point to our great team of volunteers, without whom our project would not be possible. You are the best! ♥️
About four years ago, we took over eBlockerOS from a startup insolvency and have been developing it as open source software ever since. We are proud that we are receiving more support from supporters as well as donations to fund our non-profit project.
A huge thank you to everyone who is working with us for a free Internet without trackers and ads. 🙏 Together we'll get the internet back the way it should be!
Cheers from Hamburg Boris, Christian and the entire eBlocker team
