Hello, everyone,
I'm testing the eBlocker as an alternative to AdGuard.
I would like to support a german OpenSource project, but it has to convince me.
I had the eBlocker on a Raspi 3b+ and now I just got a white cube on ebay for fun.
But there is no real fun yet. My favourite site to test is www.bild.de (yes, please don't make any further comments about it;-) )
It comes up the toolbar, I disable tracker and advertising, but still the page is blocked and everything is active again in the toolbar.
I did this 5 times, also from different clients, now even the toolbar is not coming anymore.
I declared the domain as exception in the https settings, no success. What can I do?
And I have two more questions:
1. eBlocker is now OpenSource, shouldn't there be a new version in February? I still have the 2.4.5 where everything still refers to eBlocker.com.
2. what about exceptions for other banks? My local banks are not listed for exceptions, it is difficult to know the exact URLs for them, how to get around that?
3. with eBlocker activated on my smartphone, ebay, ebay small ads will not work anymore. I don't know how many other apps don't work anymore, I dare to use the banking apps without exception...
(I eBlocker does not distribute IP addresses, my Lancom router does. So I have set static addresses on the test clients, gateway and DNS point to the eBlocker, if that is relevant)
All in all I am not really happy, but the eBlocker should run more or less without problems after 5 minutes...
What can I do?
What do you want to do? Access bild.de without having eBlocker enabled? Try hitting pause...
shouldn't there be a new version in February?
Please check the newsletter archive: it's all said.
it is difficult to know the exact URLs for them, how to get around that
Simply add a new Trusted App to the eBlocker (HTTPS->Trusted Apps). Copy the domain from the login page AND the domain after logging into your bank (if that is different) and add the to the Trusted App.
with eBlocker activated on my smartphone, ebay, ebay small ads will not work anymore.
You need to add eBlocker's certificate to your mobile properly (or disable HTTPS for the smartphone). Then mark eBay as "Trusted App" (it's pre-defined already). You probably find other Apps in the list you might want to mark trusted as well.
All in all I am not really happy,
All the described "issues" are due to a lack of reading the manual - and can easily be solved by doing so. Please check first line on top of the forum.
Hello,
Thanks for the answer.
Yes, I have not read the entire manual, but it is also suggested that after 5 minutes everything will work except for a few small things.
These little things turn out to be quite large.
I've only tried surfing with it for one day, that is practically impossible and strongly reminds me of the Microsoft ISA server at the time. Block everything in the standard.
Of course I installed the https certificate on a Win10 client as well as on an Android mobile client.
I have had to release so many apps manually ... and I am still there. By default, my smartphone was dead. Hardly an app worked.
Unfortunately, from the smartphone running Android 10 with Chrome, the exception editor crashes more often. Really impractical.
I activated the pause mode on both Windows 10 and Android, but it was shown on the pages that an ad blocker was active.
There are other things too, but I don't think there is much point in going on with it. It feels like you're sitting on a very high horse here when I see how the answer is given here.
Otherwise the forum seems to be dead, hardly any users, hardly any exchange.
Unfortunately, only in English. I could understand if there are user numbers ...
All in all really a shame, I think that your product has potential, but not so. And that also includes dealing with users, if there are any.
I go back to AdGuard and continue to watch this, let's see if it is useful at some point.
Here are a few examples of apps that all do not work at first, although this is said to occur very rarely and is an exception:
ebay.de
ebay-kleinanzeigen.de
mydealz
Dashlane
DHL
Deal god
WindowsUnited
Kicker
Warning weather
Weatherundergrond
etc.
A TV is plug & play and works in 5 minutes. But you still need to set up your channels, order and tweak audio/video to your liking. Same with eBlocker. It works plug & play in 5 minutes - but the individual adjustments take as long as you need to adapt.
Apropos adapt: Privacy is like a diet. There is no magic pill - as with diets. Being on a diet and eating ice cream sandwiches all night - might be not the best idea. Even the best "magic pill" wont help if you don't adapt and change your habits.
Your apps don't work because eBlocker blocks off their tracking tricks. If you want apps with tracking: it's like eating ice cream sandwiches. Try to change habits and use the corresponding website: then it's all good, you get the website's service and preserve your privacy.
And yes, there is a chapter about changing habits to preserve your privacy: in the user manual 😉
I activated the pause mode on both Windows 10 and Android, but it was shown on the pages that an ad blocker was active.
Impossible. If eBlocker is paused it's not touching traffic at all. You either have other blockers active or the page is still cached. Try emptying cache. And if that's with bild.de - try just bild.de/ (make sure you are going back to the homepage /, as you are on a sub-page indicating ad-blocker usage).
Last by not least:
If you take privacy seriously, there is no need to wait for a better eBlocker future. eBlocker is finished, does privacy by design and blocks everything that is tracking. It's best in class to my knowledge.
eBlocker's design approach will always cause issues with apps that heavily rely on tracking. And if other tools are not interfering with these apps - they don't help your privacy. But they might make you feel better eating ice cream sandwiches 😉
Otherwise the forum seems to be dead, hardly any users, hardly any exchange.
I'm happy to help with the numbers: We have some ten thousands of active eBlocker users growing a few hundred every month. There are roughly 1000 donors (THANK YOU!!) and about 450 registered users on the website. Among those primarily newbies are asking questions and some old eBlocker geeks are answering (THANK YOU TOO!).
We have discussion in the forum mostly at the weekends and main topics are all answered within a day. So from my perspective it's running very very well.
I totally understand that the concept of "privacy first" and "break things" is not everybody's cup of tea.
During product design we felt it's better to break things and manually decide who you trust rather than the opposite: being lazy on the tracking side and have users turn on protection individually - which leads to mistakes and poor protection.
At the end it's like with Apple. Some people love the concept some don't. And that's absolutely OK. Thanks for checking us out!
