I have a stupid question 😉
I have a M2+ (v1.1) you know the problem (overheating) and another RPI3 and RPI2 lying around, is there a speed difference between the M2+ and the RPI3/2 while surfing? I have a 1000MBit line and would not like to surf with 300mbit only 😉

Hello half-dead,

Raspberry 2 and 3 have only a 100MBit interface, raspberry 4 b is the only choice.

Here the ethernet troughput in Mbps:

raspberry       Mbps

2                    95

3                    95,4

3b+                237

4b                  943

But think about it, filtering of datatraffic costs speed 🤔 , so use a 4b 👍

regards

Honestly, I‘ve never ever heard about „overheating“ an M2+ using eBlockerOS. And I probably had all board revisions in my hand...

I also wonder where you get 1.000 Mbit/sec for private use. Even with fiber I get 400 Mbit/s max in Hamburg. I‘m jealous 😉

Nevertheless, expect 100 Mbit/sec throughput net using a Raspi 4 and all eBlocker provided filters and HTTPS switched on. If you only do DNS/no HTTPS it‘s basically full throttle.

@PIO78 The gross bandwidth you named is just theoretical. In reality it‘s less than 50% of that. Due to the fact that in- and outbound traffic is routed via the same adapter plus protocol overhead...

THX!

Believe it or not i have 1000Mbit/s 🙂 The M2+ before V1.2 has a no Power Management, the CPU is always driven by 1.3V and no stepdown. My diy eblocker now is coold by a mini fan, but the noises are annoying. I guess I'm not gonna get around to testing it.

DNS filter makes no speed difference, maybe the APR spoofing but i think the whole traffic does not go through the eblocker. Because that would mean more than halving the speed.

That‘s exactly what I tried to discuss.

Fact is: Using https all traffic is routed thru eBlocker otherwise eBlocker can not check the traffic.

Just a personal remark to remind of reality: Today Google demands sites to load and render in less than 3 sec to get a good ranking. Having 100MBit/s or 1.000MBit/s does not waste much time while surfing - unless you are a fly 😉

In case of high bandwidth demand for downloading you could always hit Pause.

Today Raspi 4 is the fastest hardware to run eOS. But I hope Cray is releasing a SBC soon to cover the flies as well 😉

@half-dead I double checked: we actually started with a pre-series M2+ and used every board revision since for the series production as we build in batches. In some ten thousand units in use we never heard about overheating to my knowledge.

Maybe due to the extra CPU heatsink we added? 🤔

It's conceivable. I only have a small heatsink on the M2+.

Maybe I just got a bad model.

Now I bought an original Eblocker Cube at Ebay.

I did a test and could not find any significant differences in speed (without ssl) between the M2+ and the RPI3. But I only tested the page speed and the download speed.

@half-dead With your bandwidth (still jealous 😉) I'd definitely recommend a Raspi 4 if you are serious about speed and privacy. It's about three times faster in throughput than the M2+.

On the other hand I guess you are not a fly 😉 and the M2+ is a very robust and stable board that is business proven for years.

Good luck!
