[Solved] The need for speed

There are, in my case, at least 2 ways to use a VPN-service.
1. Using an App from a VPN-service provider, such as PIA (Private Internet Access)
2. Using eBlocker Anonymization with an .ovpn-file from PIA
In both cases the connection can be made with a server in Frankfurt.

Having said that, the difference between them is SPEED!
I have a 100 Mbps-contract with my ISP and when using option 1. on my iPad, the App Speedtest shows a speed of 100 or nearly that value while using a testserver in the vicinity of the VPN-server.
When using option 2., Speedtest only shows less than 10 Mbps (!) using the same testserver only 3 km away from the VPN-server. In this case the measured Upload-speed is higher (!) than the Download-speed.

Is this normal behavior or do i interpret these results in the wrong way?

Have a contract at ISP SX4ALL for 100 Mbps and a configuration as shown by my Fritz!Box (see enclosed screenshot). When i run the Speedtest or the site fast.com with the eBlocker paused, they both indicate about 60 Mbps. As soon as i activate eBlocker again, they both indicate a speed of approx. 26 Mbps.

Is this normal or do i something wrong?

Rob

Sorry, forgot to mention that this spread reduction applies to my iMac.

When using the pattern blocker there is a bandwidth reduction caused by unpacking, decrypting and pattern matching the TCP/IP packages - and blocking and routing. This delay also depends on the number of blocking list entries. The more you add the more processing time is needed. Last but not least it depends very much on your eBlocker platform.

I get 100 Mbit/s on Raspi 4 with all eBlocker managed lists enabled. Without eBlocker it‘s 120-140 (s. attached).

Even 26 Mbit/s might not sound like the greatest bandwidth, it‘s enough to browse and even stream movies in 4k. When downloading large files you could always pause eBlocker.

Hmm. I understand what you say, but...

If i do the same exercise with my iPad, on the same desk as where my iMac is, the results are: With eBlocker paused for the iPad 95 Mbps and with the eBlocker functioning normally 97 Mbps! (no eBlocker-settings or blocking-setup was changed)

Both the iPad and the iMac are connected to the repeater. Have to admit that the iPad is only 3 years old; the iMac is halve 2007.

It's not really important, but at least curious.

Strange. Is https enabled on the iPad too? Same testing site (fast.com)? What eBlocker model is that?

Sounds more like the bandwidth drop is due to other reasons and not related to eBlocker. Maybe other people using the WLAN or neighbors on same channel.  Cloud you please repeat the experiment a few times to see the variation. Best is a wired connection to get reliable results.

THX.

Hi Random,

HTTP is always enabled for all iPhones, iPads and Macs. eBlocker was bought in July 2018 from GmbH and yes, differences occurred with all other variables unchanged.

Connecting the iPad to Ethernet is somewhat of a problem and to connect the iMac with a cable means an internal move. My Fritz!Box informed me that there are some 40 WiFi-networks around, but that (in theory) should not be a problem as my iPad and my iMac were ‘sitting’ side-by-side on my desk and they experience the same interference.

Maybe the ‘other reason’ is the age of my iMac; i should have a serious discussion with Santa Claus and find out his (hers actually) ideas about a new Mac.

And most probably you are right when you say “not related to eBlocker”, but it remains a strange phenomenon.

@robfranssen-fr I‘ve merged your new question with an existing thread regarding speed as the answer is the same: The more computation power is needed (i.e. for encrypting VPN) the slower it gets. The only way to fight this is a faster hardware...

If you are unhappy with your speed results, get a Raspi 4. Using eBlockerOS on a Raspi 4 I get approx. 100Mbit/s with https connections (full blocking protection), 80-90 using VPN and 15-30 even using TOR.

Hi Random,

- VPN-connections are encrypted in both cases

- iPad is the same in both cases

- Original eBlocker (white cube) is less than 2 years old

90% speed loss because of old hardware?

Yes, is the answer I guess.

I wish there would be a secret „make old eBlocker faster“ switch I could reveal 😉

If you have a „need for speed“, sell your old powerhorse VW (white cube) and get a sporty Tesla (Raspi 4).

That will satisfy all your speed needs 😎 🤩

@random

I would eventually consider a Raspi 4, but never a Tesla.

And a great car, der Käfer, i had one in 1970.

Thank you for sharing your ideas. Rob

I still use the original cube. Now I bought the Raspberry Pi4 for the IoT network.
Question: Should I replace the original cube with the Raspy Pi4, because the Raspy Pi4 has better performance?
With best regards Mike

@infoswissmagic-ch I‘ve merged your topic to this thread as it probably answers your question.
