I have a problem on my iPhone where my eBlocker Mobile VPN connects successfully since switching providers from Telekom mobile to Vodafone mobile contract but I no longer have access to the eBlocker or any of my network devices. Does Vodafone use the same address range as eBlocker Mobile? Does anyone know this issue and does anyone have a solution for me?
I'm using Vodafone as well without any problems - and eBlocker should work provider agnostic as long as you receive an IPv4 IP address from your provider.
Please state more clearly how you access eBlocker and how to reproduce step by step. "When I enter the URL http://eblocker.box I get the following error <screenshot>. I have also tried xyz..."
To access LAN internal devices make sure your device is configured properly: https://eblocker.org/en/docs/can-i-also-access-devices-in-my-network/
Hi Benne, thank you for your answer to my problem.
I have been successfully using eBlocker for years, currently on a Raspberry Pi 5 with OS4 – it works in my home network without any issues. I have also always been able to dial in from outside via eBlocker and access the internet securely through it, as well as reach my home network. The only thing that has changed is that I switched my mobile phone from T-Mobile to Vodafone (1&1) – since then it no longer works.
The problem looks like this:
I can connect and successfully ping all devices in the home network as well as websites such as google.de – the routes also go through the eBlocker’s IP address that I was assigned via VPN: 10.8.0.1 – I myself received 10.8.0.6 via VPN.
However, I cannot open any websites in Safari – none at all, including eblocker.box – no pages are displayed whatsoever.
When I connect via WireGuard to my FRITZ!Box, I can reach everything, but without the protection of eBlocker.
I cannot open any websites in Safari
Please try
- a different browser (like Firefox) on the same device
- a different device (also using eBlocker Mobile), preferably non Apple.
- to access a URL in your home network via Safari (say your router's web interface, for instance)
Share results (preferably a screenshot) of each try.
THX!
I tested various browsers on the iPhone — unfortunately without success — but the problem exists in all apps. All of them have no internet access (at least that’s the error message shown), and in no browser can I access any internet URL or internal websites in my homelab (regardless of whether via DNS name or IP address).
As I mentioned, ping and the routes to those destinations work — and with a network scan I can also see all my devices.
I cannot test another device right now — but I will do so next week.
As already mentioned — it always worked on my iPhone — but has stopped working since switching my mobile contract to Vodafone (1&1).
Nothing was changed on the eBlocker, and it has already been completely restarted. At home on the internal network everything works perfectly — only eBlocker mobile is not working.
I was able to narrow down the problem further:
When I open a hotspot via a second phone (iPhone with a Vodafone contract) and connect through it via eBlocker Mobile, it works. Through this hotspot I get assigned a 172.x.x.x address.
As soon as I connect via my 1&1 Vodafone contract, I have the problems described above.
If I were you I'd contact your phone provider to check if they are blocking certain ports. This is rare - but 1&1 Vodafone might be some other "service level" than the "real" Vodafone (which I'm using).
Unfortunately it took a little while — according to 1&1, VPNs are technically not supported and no guarantee of functionality is given. When I asked more specifically why OpenVPN doesn’t work while WireGuard connections do, I received no response despite asking multiple times.
I hope WireGuard will be officially released in eBlocker soon 😉
If 1&1 is blocking the OpenVPN default port (1194 UDP) you can simply change the port eBlockerOS is using during the eBlocker Mobile setup. If you use a port that is not blocked, OpenVPN probably works as good as Wireguard does. (Make sure to forward that port to your eBlocker, of course.)
By the way: Wireguard is using 51820 UDP by default and you could try this port (even network nerds like @random will kill me for this hint 😉).
Personally I'd not use a mobile provider blocking VPN ports at all. This is a very bad "service". 👎
My grandma always said "If you buy cheap, you buy twice". That's why I'd suggest to pay the extra dime to get good service from a professional phone company not giving you a VPN headache... 🤷
Good luck anyway!
