Hi, i gave eBlocker a try and love it. But i have a very strange behavior on my home network and don’t know how to sort it out.
Quick Facts:
- FritzBox 7590 (Mainbox) on 1&1 Versatel Line
- FritzBox 7490 (used as Wifi Repeater connected over LAN)
- FritzRepeater 1200
- OpenWRT Device (used as Wi-Fi Repeater connected over LAN)
Hardware:
Raspberry PI3 B connected over LAN directly to FritzBox 7590 running eBlocker 2.8.2
Problem:
I am running eBlocker in expert mode with external DHCP (7590). FritzBox IPv6 disabled, and DHCP DNS Setting on 7590 set to eBlocker IP. As I can not set the gateway IP on 7590 - when doing the client function test in dashboard, I get some red warnings. Same in automatic mode. Here already starts the nightmare, I get connection drops on the clients and sites are not loading sporadically.
Now I disabled the FritzBox 7590 DHCP and enabled the DHCP on eBlocker. Every client now get the right settings and when doing the client function tests everything is green.
But like every 2-5 minutes, sites are not loading - Wi-Fi on smartphones still connected but phone switches to mobile data connection. Only internal IP Addresses can be reached in this time. Some devices telling that no WI-FI internet connection is available for like 15 seconds.
After that I gave the repeaters a static ip and removed the 7490 from network because of the known problems. Restarted everything afterwards. Also checked all network devices if some DHCP Service is active. Behavior is still the same. Also when reconnecting on Wi-Fi it takes sometimes like 15 seconds till the same local IP address is assigned by eBlocker and sometimes the IP settings disappears and returns after some time when checking Wi-Fi settings on iPhone. On the same time the connection drops and only internal ips are available. Setting and dashboard site of eBlocker still available.
I also get warnings that the external DNS servers have a bad connection and should be removed but it doesn’t matter if I take the standard 1.1.1.1 / 9.9.9.9 or those of ffmuc or also the FritzBox IP. First they get a green mark after adding, then they get all the red ! mark after like two connections drops.
I reset the eBlocker 3 times to factory defaults and start from scratch and always get the same problem.
When I shutdown eBlocker, set dhcp on FritzBox to active and assign the FritzBox IP as DNS or I have another SD-Card with Adguard Home on it and start it on the same RPI3 and let FritzBox dhcp announce the IP of the RPI3 the nightmare ends, when eBlocker is off. IPv6 still deactivated here and it runs.
How can I fix this, where can be the problem? The behavior is like, that there are two DHCP Servers running, but every dhcp except eBlockers one is disabled. Is it possible that RPI3s have some problems and some process is crashing on eBlocker and restarting then? The longer RPI3 with eBlocker runs, as more often the connection drops.
I would love to use it and spend some money but actually I can not use it.
@onserious Usually you just need to set eBlocker to Individual (or Expert) Network Mode with eBlocker‘s DHCP, make sure there is no other DHCP Server active and everything works just fine - even with a fritzbox 7490.
I suggest to start all over with a new SD card (we had users with strange behaviors due to an old SD card). Then start with a minimal setup: eBlocker (in Individual Network Mode running DHCP!), just one client (i.e. you iOS device), one router. NO repeaters (which can be another source of error - see Compatibility). If this runs fine, extend network, find source of error and share here.
Personally, I’d guess your repeaters might be causing the issue, as other fritzbox repeaters are marked incompatible too.
BTW: I run a network with some 50 devices - most are eBlocker enabled: no problem and ~130Mbit/s throughput on Raspi 4 with all blockers & HTTPS enabled.🚀

I tried it again a whole day, and started only with the main FritzBox 7590.
eBlocker DHCP was active, and it was running for some time. FB7590 DHCP deactivated, IPv6 deactivated.
After I connected the whole clients, the problems started again. On my TV I got like every 2 minutes the messages, that wifi connection is disrupted, on YouTube TV App, not all pictures were loaded, on lan pc and wifi notebook I got sometimes errors that site is not reachable. On Phone after reconnecting after a reboot, it got not a dhcp ip adress, till eblocker was restart.
again the dns-servers in eBlocker got the red ! mark. eBlocker was enabled for the 3 clients (phone, notebook, pc) for testing purposes with https scan, there it was somehow running, but after putting more clients online, without enable eBlocker for them, the problems started (the other Fritz! Devices still offline)
I shut eblocker down and gone back to my adguard home appliance.
maybe the rpi3 has not enough power or ram to take the whole 15 devices, so i have no power anymore and think it is now time to stop for me. bad for me that there is no image or small linux appliance to install and run on proxmox, vmware esxi etc. but i will not buy an extra rpi4 when it maybe also will fail because of some devices.
@onserious Step by step, please - so we can diagnose focused and help. 😉
- Please go back to the setup where you say everything worked: 1 Client, 1 Router.
- There please run the "Function Test" in the Dashboard first. If all check marks are green, go to Settings>Doctor and check if there are configuration errors. Otherwise report back here with the errors you are getting. Screenshots are best.
In any case: Make sure eBlocker is set to Individual or Expert Network Mode. This avoids most network issues. And read and follow the startup guide - this is mandatory and avoids frustration.
Regarding apps not showing images/working properly - make sure you checked/enabled the corresponding Trusted Apps (HTTPS>Trusted Apps Tab). But first make sure (as discussed above) everything else is green.
I discussed the Raspi 4 performance above already. NO problem with your 15 devices - for sure!
THX!
again the dns-servers in eBlocker got the red ! mark
Sorry oversaw this. Then something is definitely not set up properly... - maybe eBlocker has no Internet connection at all? The doctor (see above) will tell you what's going wrong.👨⚕️👍
Again: Make sure all checkmarks are green and there are no complains from the doctor. Then your setup is OK. Then you might want to enable Trusted Apps and add other clients...
