Dear gentlemen,

Would anyone care to explain the following.

The eBlocker and internet access work as they are supposed to do and eBlocker is set as DNS server with a custom list of external servers as shown below

IMG 2377

The Cloudflare server 1.1.1.1 normally shows a green checkbox mark, but for some reason (?) it doesn't do so now. The Quad9 server 9.9.9.9 didn't show a green checkbox mark since a long time (weeks/months!).

Now, i just wander how the eBlocker is choosing between these 2 servers or any other additional server (as long as it is free, reliable, available, non-logging and not 8.8.8.8 from Google :-).

Regards, Rob

@calimero Hi,

I knew that option and left it unchanged to "by availability".

But that doesn't really answer my question. If both DNS servers are available, then how is the choice made? And does the presence of a checkmark have any influence on that choice? If YES, then how? If NO, what is then the meaning of showing the checkmark?

In my screenshot "Response Time", "Reliability and "Rating" are all empty for both the shown servers. What does that say about these servers?

We have a saying "a small child and old men can ask more questions than a wise man can answer"; i hope my questions don't fall in that category 😏

@robf Hi Rob,

how the choice exactly works, I can't tell you, but my DNS servers are all fast, high and green, only 9.9.9.9, which is fast, red and of low quality.

Don't know why they are empty for your eBlocker, as they are not for mine... :-/

@calimero

😀 Same as yours and is the only option to get to the list of custom DNS servers shown in my screenshot.

but my DNS servers are all fast, high and green

That can only mean that your eBlocker is much better than mine 😏

@calimero

In that case, i can only wait until "a wise man" passes by. Thanks for the effort. Rob

@robf I'm surely not "a wise man" but I feel the meaning of the menu items is quite clear:

  • "by availability" means that red flagged/unavailable DNS servers are not used. The first available DNS server (according to the set priority) is used in this mode.
  • "in round robin mode" means that all DNS (regardless of their status) are used one after another (as set in the list) for each DNS request
  • "in random order" is similar to round robin but the DNS sever for each request is randomly chosen

Even I know you are curios, I'd recommend to leave the setting at default value (= "by availability") unless your really know what you are doing. BTW: eBlockerOS is not protecting you better the more you tamper with it, but it's rather designed to deliver great protection with default settings.

Even if I repeat myself: Never change a well running system! 😉

THX!

@random I wouldn't dare to doubt your wisdom 😏 and yes, i'm curious by nature, but i have no intention to 'change a winning horse'. My curiosity got triggered by the fact that i had no green checkmarks or info about the DNS servers in the table yesterday and today i have.

And as a consequence, i wondered if there is any relation between these checkmarks and the DNS server being used given the (1 of 3) selection made in the dropdown menu (in my case always 'by availability). Seemed a fair question...
