Hi, short question, is it possible to use an USB Stick for the Image on a Raspberry instead the SDcard? All instructions are saying SDcard, but I like to use a stick.

TIA

@3dscrewer In theory a USB stick should work as well, but personally I've never tried.

Just make sure not to insert an SD card into the Pi as SD has boot precedence over USB drives to my knowledge.

And same as with SD: you must use Balena Etcher (or similar) to write the eBlockerOS image to the USB stick.

Please share your experience 👍

@random @3dscrewer Good morning, YES it is possible to use also an USB Stick or an USB HDD/SSD with the eBlocker image applied via Balena Etcher.

@3dscrewer I would prefer an small USB SSD drive, because it is much more performant than an USB Stick.

regards

Sorry it was lasting a while, but since I was using Pi-Hole and it was working as usual I didn’t try eBlocker.
So since a couple of days eBlocker is running, so far, without problems from an USB 3.0 Stick.

Hi everyone,

I have a similar question. I would like to migrate from a running SD-Card to an USB-SSD, as I "burned" several SD-Card already (the SD cards broke after around 3 years). I set up the USB-SSD but the Raspberry Pi did not boot. I guess that this is because I need to update the bootloader such that I can boot from USB.

In order to do so I need to boot the Raspberry Pi once with a different SD so that I am getting able to update the bootloader, switch the order in the config and then boot from USB.

My question is: I guess I need to first enable the DHCP on my router (Fritz-Box) before I take the eBlocker from the network, right? Is there anything else I should be aware of such that the migration runs smoothly?

Yes, that is recommended if eBlocker runs the DHCP.

Don't forget to switch DHCP off again in the router, once eBlockerOS runs in individual/expert network settings.

When restoring from backup please note that not all parameters are backed up and double check your settings after restore:

@mr-bien Ups. You are right. The provided link only works for eBlocker supporters as the referred post is in our internal forum.

Here is the content of the post:

The backup screen (see screenshot at https://eblocker.org/en/docs/system/#5-toc-title ) is correct. Only this data is backed up:

  • Device settings
  • Trusted apps and websites
  • Tor settings
  • Optionally HTTPS keys

VPN or DNS settings are not included.

THX!
