[Solved] VPN connection breaks repeatedly

I have an issue with repeatedly breaking VPN connections. Only rebooting eBlocker solves the issue temporarily. 

I am using NordVPN and activate it per device. This works until a certain point in time. Then, the internet connection drops until I disable VPN for the device. Trying to enable it again throws an error as shown in the attached screenshot.

 Rebooting eBlocker solves the issue temporarily, meaning that everything works smoothly again also with VPN enabled. 

No idea which event breaks the connection. It is just gone at some point.

I guess this is a bug in eBlocker. Any idea how to solve / workaround?

I wouldn't judge to fast. eBlockerOS IP-anonymization via VPN is used successfully by thousands(!) of users every day - including myself. I'd rather guess there is some individual configuration conflict taking place with NordVPN.

You are right, one shouldn't judge too early. Guessing is not a good approach.

  • Hardware you use for running eBlockerOS:
    • Raspberry Pi
  • eBlockerOS version as well as filter lists version
    • eBlockerOS 2.10.3. 2023-10-05-10-15-04
  • eBlocker network mode (auto, individual or expert)
    • individual
  • eBlocker network settings (IP, mask, gateway)
    • 192.168.2.55, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.2.1
  • Which devices runs DHCP server? Router/external, eBlocker or client fixed IP?
    • eBlocker, disabled in FritzBox
  • IPv6 disabled for client/network?
    • disabled
  • eBlocker DNS firewall settings

  • Client network settings (IP, mask, DNS, gateway)

  • Whether eBlocker’s https integration is enabled for client 
    • yes, enabled
  • Client browser and OS version (i.e. FireFox 80.1 running on macOS 13.4)
    • Safari Version 17.0 (19616.1.27.211.1), macOS 14.0 (23A344)
  • Additional non default Blockers enabled? (like DuckDuckGo, Consent-Blocker, custom lists etc.)
    • no
  • HTTPS Auto Trust App enabled?
    • yes, enabled
  • Exact way or a link / screenshot to reproduce the issue
    • reproduction quite hard, occurs sporadically, don't know what causes the event. VPN is set up in Anonymization. Test Connection okay, also works then for a while for the device. At some point - gone. Even now when I tried it worked. So, cannot yet send the the log-file. Will append to the thread upon reoccurrence.
  • If VPN or Tor is enabled for the client in eBlocker (and which VPN provider you are using)
    • VPN enabled for the client/devide. NordVPN
  • Are automatic updates enabled?
    • Yes.
  • Please use a meaningful title & description other users with same issue would enter as search term

I am waiting for the issue to occur again … „unfortunately“ everything is stable at the moment.

Well … stable… may be it was some temporary issue at NordVPN. Will close this one when it keeps stable today

BTW: I would have wondered very much if your issue would have been "a bug". Of course eBlockerOS is not bug free. But very often used core functionality (like VPN) is very well tested and just works - if used as documented...😉
