Hi, is there a possiblity to place the filesystem onto an externel SSD-Drive. This would be very helpful, because sd-cards are getting slower an slower after a time period. With dietpi there is such a helpful movement. All disk accesses would be than on the SSD and not on the slow SD-card. There i one more adventage. On the SSD a swap can be used und configured.

eBlocker hardware

@foresthus Today, it‘s not possible to add an SSD and to my knowledge there are no plans to do so in future.

This is for a simple reason: eBlockerOS is optimized for SD card usage and there is not much access to the file system taking place. So there is literally no impact in terms of eBlocker’s speed if you change the storage media. In addition it‘s much cheaper to swap out an SD card in case the card is „worn out“ .

Personally I work with SBCs for more than six years now - and never had a broken/slow SD card. But of course individual results may vary. In any case it‘s a good idea not to buy the cheapest SD but rather invest in a good brand.

THX!

@random : Hi, I am using the Raspberrys for several years now and I can give you the information, that using a Raspberry with a SSD is up to 10 times quicker, beleave me. Try dietpi and compare that to the normal raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS.

@foresthus I believe you are talking about general Raspis running some generic software and I'm sure your thesis is right for regular applications.

But believe me, eBlockerOS runs in memory - and doesn't access the file system very much. And if there is no access to the file system, speed enhancements to the filesystem don't make the eBlocker run faster at all. That's a proven fact.

Of course you are very welcome to add an SSD to your eBlocker if you have linux experience. Then please share your experience based on facts - rather than on assumptions 😉

THX!

@foresthus

I can only confirm what @random said. eBlocker's speed is not influenced by the file system. So an SSD would be no gain. Today, CPU and memory speed are the only constrains that limit speed on Raspi 4 to ~150 MBit/s. If you need more thru-put - you need to wait for Raspi 5 😉

@foresthus I do not understand where your problem is.... just write the image to an USB stick or SSD and connect it to an Raspi4/Raspi400 with the firmware which can boot from USB devices. And that's it 🙂

@benne @random And just a quick information for you -> the eblocker is much more responsive from my external ssd/usb stick test! Dashboard and settings page is much faster than ever before.... and I am already using sandisk ultra/extreme/extreme pro as microsd cards

I guess you are talking about loading the Dashboard/Settings. I was talking about bandwidth while browsing with eBlocker protection...

To get to facts rather than rely on "feelings":
Can you please share measurement data about 1. how much speed increase in terms of loading time of Dashboard/Settings is gained and 2. how the Internet throughput (=bandwidth Mb/s) is improved by the change to SSD.

THX!

@random You're absolutely right 🙂 I just was impressed on how fast the dashboard now opens...

from 11seconds to fully load and be able to click on somethin to 4seconds now...

Tests are running

@random Forget my 11 to 4 seconds improvement.. whatever it was, it is gone since my testing and rebooting of the devices.....

the Internet throughput is not much different 91MB/s to 93MB/s to pinpoint it out to the ssd, but the bootup process of the raspi is much faster and unplug/replug the ssd/usb stick is much easier, than unplug and replug the microsd now 🙂

So it's a "nice2have" for the ppl which do not rely on microsd cards..

You can use MicroSD, USB Stick or SSD/USB-SSD  if you have an Raspi4 /Raspi400 without doing something special. Just flash the image to your prefered device and plug it into the raspi.

To make it just a little more clear:

THIS ONLY WORKS WITH RASPI DEVICES WHICH ARE PREPARED TO BOOT FROM USB ONLY!

@calimero Thanks for confirming that adding an SSD has no relevant impact on bandwidth / throughput. That's exactly what I tried to discussed above... 😉

THX!
